WHO IS A DEACON AND WHAT DO THEY DO?
The Greek word for “deacon” (διάκονος) is translated as “servant.” All Christians are called to “deacon” (serve), but some are selected (Acts 6) with specific qualifications (1 Tim 3) to be appointed “deacons.” Deacons foster church unity by serving the urgent and tangible needs of members, allowing elders/pastors to focus on the ministry of the word and prayer (Acts 6).
When covenant members encounter urgent and extraordinary needs - illness/hospitalization, suffering and distress, financial strife, emergencies, or death, deacons serve to:
PROTECT the unity of the church
PROVIDE for members in need
PRAY for God’s intercession
HOW DO DEACONS SERVE?
Deacons will primarily serve and care for the church by addressing practical needs, assisting in church ministries, and supporting the physical and spiritual well-being of the congregation.
Visitation for encouragement and prayer to church members/families;
Coordination w/ Home Group for meal trains, prayer requests, household help, funeral assistance; and/or
Further benevolence care - financial aid, counseling referrals, elder involvement
HOW ARE DEACONS CHOSEN?
Deacon candidates will submit applications to be reviewed by and approved by the Elder Board. The Elder review process will ensure that those stepping into this role have a heart for service and meet the biblical qualifications for Deacons (1 Tim 3). Applicants must be a Covenant Member for at least 1 year and have served in a GHC ministry.
Terms: Deacon will serve one- to three-year terms, with a required one-year break between service periods to prevent overloading and burnout. This flexibility will allow for greater participation and sustainability in the role.
